Promotion Policy for Quincy Middle School

It is the goal of the Quincy Community School District for all students to achieve the highest level of learning possible based on high expectations, while giving consideration to individual student abilities and needs.  The district recognizes that students have diverse capabilities and interests, and individual patterns of growth and learning.

 Beginning on August 24, 2005, the Quincy Community School District will promote students in sixth through eighth grades based upon the criteria outlined in this Promotion Policy. 

 Promotion Criteria:

 1.      Academic Performance – Promotion Point System

A student must earn a minimum of EIGHT (8) points during the school year to be promoted into the next grade.  A student can earn points by accomplishing the following:

a.       1 point for each semester of a course passed.

b.      .5 point for every enrichment course passed

c.       A total of 10 points are possible

 

2.      Academic Performance and Summer School

a.       A student who earns a minimum of SIX AND A HALF (6.5) points may take summer school.   Upon successful completion of summer school, the student will be promoted to the next grade level.  Summer school costs $100.00 and meets for 20 days at the end of the school year.  Classes are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

 Or

 Prior to the completion of the first semester, the middle school staff will hold grade level meetings to discuss strategies to assist any students who may be in jeopardy of not completing the academic performance requirements. 

Within two weeks of the completion of the first semester, teachers will make their recommendations to the principal regarding students who will need placement with an Education Team.  This principal-appointed team will consist of a teacher(s), parent(s)/guardian(s), principal, various support staff, and the student.  The goal of this team will be to develop a plan for aiding student academic success for the remainder of the school year. 

Another priority of the team will be to make recommendations for the following year based on, but not limited to the following:

                        MEAP Results                          NWEA Results

                        Academic Achievement            Previous Academic Performance

                        Attendance

 These procedures are for general education placement and do not include special education students whose educational process is reviewed at least annually by an Individual Education Planning Committee meeting.
