Quincy Middle School has selected a new method for computing honor roll this year. In the past, students had to earn all A’s to be on the All A honor roll or all A’s and B’s to be on the All AB honor roll. This meant that a student who received five A’s and a C+ was not on the honor roll. After evaluating the high school’s system for selection of honor roll students, we have decided to use a system of grade point averages in our selection process. Students having a grade point average of 3.5-4.0 would receive High Honors, and students having a grade point average of 3.0-3.49 would receive Honors. To compute a grade point average in the middle school, we use a 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, and 0 point scale for A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s and E’s respectively. All core classes count as a full credit and each exploratory count as a half credit. An example of computing a grade point average is below: Step 1: Compute points earned in each class: Grade x Credit Value = Points earned for class Social
Studies A- 4.0 x 1 = 4.0 Step 2: Add up all points earned in classes and divide by the total credit value: 4.0 + 3.0 + 2.0 + 3.0 + 1.5 + 2.0 = 15.5 points 15.5 credits points ÷ 5 credits = 3.1 GPA This student would be
receiving Honors for his performance and be placed on the honor roll.
