Help Detentions
Hey parents, we need your help with this
one!!!! Student’s inability to complete homework has become a major
problem at QMS.
Missing and incomplete assignments have led to the
failure of many students in classes throughout the middle school.
This program is designed to increase student
efficacy as it pertains to homework. Did
you know that students who receive an E on their report card do so because
of missing assignments? How can a teacher give a student any credit or
points for an assignment not turned in? Well, we want to work on this, but
we need your support and help. Many have asked the following questions....
If homework results in
so many missing assignments then maybe the teachers shouldn't give homework.
Not giving homework would solve the
homework problem, but then it would create a learning problem. When a
student receives new material to learn, it is important to reinforce the
material learned later in the day.
Here is an example....ever have to
memorize a phone number? Any one can do that, and I bet you had to
memorize one just today! No problem, you memorized the phone number,
dialed the phone and successfully completed the call. Now the
catch.....do you still remember the phone number yet tonight? Ah,
probably not...then I guess you didn't really LEARN the number after all.
Hummmm let's sweeten the pot, what if I offered you $100.00 (just
pretending now, I don't have an extra $100) to remember the phone number
and I will check back with you tomorrow? I bet you would take the phone
number home, review it, look at it, have someone test you, then tomorrow
morning you would refresh your memory. That is just the way the human
brain works. To learn anything we must review and practice the material.
Your child is learning many things
during the educational process....review and practice is a must.
With sports practice,
chores, TV, computers, and hanging out......when are we suppose to get
homework done?
This is a great question. It is
hard. Most American families are pulled in so many directions. But if
you maintain an expectation to get homework done and it is a priority,
then it will happen. Set aside a time and place and stick to it as much
as possible. Your attitude about homework is contagious!!!
What constitutes a
missing assignment?
Any assignment that is considered a
daily homework assignment (overnight assignment, spelling packet, work
problem, etc.).
Items not included in this policy include:
projects, research papers, etc.) An
assignment will be considered missing if the assignment is not turned in
or the student fails to complete at least 75% of the assignment.
(Assignments with 10 or fewer problems/questions
must be 100% complete.)
How does my student
receive a help detention?
1st Verbal
Warning. The assignment may be turned in the following class for 75% of
the grade earned and that the next offense of failing to complete an
assignment will result in a phone call to the parent.
2nd
Missing assignment will result in a phone call to the parent of the
student informing the parent of the student’s failure to complete the
assignment. During the phone call the teacher will inform the parent that
the assignment may be turned in the following class for 75% of the grade
earned and that the next offense of failing to complete an assignment will
result in an after-school detention.
3rd Missing
assignment (and all future occurrences) will result in an after-school
detention, where the student will be required to complete the assignment.
The assignment will be turned into the detention monitor. The student
will receive 75% of the grade earned on the assignment.
