Genetics and Heredity Terms

Trait - Physical characteristic of on organism.

Heredity - The passing of traits from parent to offspring.

Genetics - Study of heredity.

Allele - Alternate forms of a gene. (T or t)  (Tall or short)

Homozygous (Purebred) - Having the same alleles or genotype (TT)

Heterozygous (Hybrid) - Having different alleles or gentotypes (Tt)

Dominate Trait - A trait that ALWAYS shows when it is present.

Recessive Trait - A trait that is hidden if a dominate trait is present.

Genotype - The actual genetic make-up.  Shown as a Letter (T or t).

Phenotype - Physical characteristic. Shown with words. (Tall or Short)

Mutations - A change in the gene or the process by which a change occurs.
