Motion
Key Terms
Axis- an __ is any vertical line or horizontal line of graph. If the x-__ and the y-__ are talked about at the same time both of them are called axes.
Balanced forces- exist when all the forces acting on an object result in the object staying at rest or moving at a continuous speed in the same direction.
Conclusion- The __ is the part of the scientific method that should relate directly to the purpose statement. It summarizes the results of the experiment and provides evidence for proving or disproving the hypothesis.
Dependent Variable: A variable whose value can be found from one or more other variable whose value is known first.
Distance- is the measurement of how far from each other two points or places are.
Force- a __ is a push or pull on something. A __ is necessary to change the motion of something.
Frame of Reference- the framework used to describe the motion of an object through observation and measurement is a __.
Friction- is a force that acts on an object due to being rubbed against another object or material. One for example of __ is the force that acts on an object when we try to move it across a surface.
Graph- a __ is a way to organize data. It gives a picture of what happened in an experiment. A __ that uses lines to connect points in order to show data is called a line __.
Gravity- is described as a force by which one object pulls on another object. Because __ of Earth, we are pulled toward the Earth.
Horizontal- Lines on a graph that are parallel to the horizon are __ in direction. The x-axis is a __ on a graph.
Hypothesis- The __ is a step in the scientific method where a statement isWritten that supports an idea. It should be based on research and personal experiences and observations. It is more than a guess. It should be clear and concise and be related to the purpose statement.
Independent Variable: A variable whose values are specified first of before an experiment is preformed and are used to find values of an expression, another variable, or function that depends on the first variable.
Inference- some one makes an __ when he/she forms a tentative conclusion based on observations.
Information- The __ step in the scientific method gives an opportunity to find out what is already known and about the subject being investigated.
Mass- The __ of an object is the amount of stuff an object has. The more mass or stuff an object has, the harder it is to change its motion.
Motion- is changing of a position. It can be described in changes of distance, time and or direction.
Newton-A __ is a metric unit for measuring forces.
Observation- An __ is the careful and thoughtful process by which information is gathered by using the –senses.
Possible errors- any factor that might interfere with an investigation or alter the results in someway is called __.
Procedure- The __ is the step-by-step process by which an experiment is done. It is part of the scientific method.
Purpose- The __ is why an investigation is being done. It is the reason for the investigation.
Qualitative Observation- this is an observation made by using only the senses. It does not depend on measurement.
Quantitative Observation- this is an observation made m\by measuring something.
Results- the __ step is a part or the scientific method where data observed in an investigation is recorded. The __ are the findings in the experiment and are often expressed in the form of data table and/or a graph. The __should include only information, which has been tested and could be repeated.
Scientific method- the __ involves several steps scientists follow to find answers to problems.
Speed- describes how fast something is moving. Instantaneous __ is how fast an object moves at a certain point in time. Average __ is determined by dividing the trip distance by the total time of the trip.
Unbalanced forces- exist when all the forces acting on an object result in a change of motion in an object. If it was at rest, it begins to move. If it is moving it changes speed or it changes direction.
Variables- are the properties of things that can change, be changed or vary in an investigation. __ can affect the results of an experiment. Some examples of _ are time, distance, and temperature. Vertical – The lines on a graph that are perpendicular to the horizon are __ in direction. The y-axis a __ line on the graph.
Verify- to __ something is to confirm by testing or checking. This is to determine the accuracy of an observation or set of data.
Weight- the __ of something is a measure of the apparent pull exerted on it
